The fever extends past just WATCHING football, too... everyone has pumped up their soccer balls and are playing everywhere (in the daytime here, when there are no games being broadcast): kids play barefoot in the sand, teens on the street, and adults in the fields... (just men, though... i got a funny look when i asked to get in on a game... ) There's some real talent out there, too... it surprises me that Indonesia doesn't have a team that qualified for the World Cup.

I read that the Indonesian government has issued a stern warning something to the effect that just because the World Cup is on, that's no excuse for people to miss work (because they're tired, since they stayed up all night watching the games, live). But it seems maybe people were too tired to heed their warning.

Hey kids,
At least you can watch the games--those of us who don't have TV cannot. When we get to the Lake, Barbi has arranged with Penny to watch the France games over there--Jacques of course is a huge soccer fan--you remember the last time France won the cup!!!! Tell Martin that I'll be pulling for Ecuador, even if they are playing France--just for fun.
Love, Mom xoxo

Hey Buddy...missed you at Grad tonight. I just want to say I think it's really cool what you're doing, and to keep your chin up and your 'knickers out of knots' (not long ago you were saying that to me). You are the difference, and we're rooting for you. Don't forget that.

ange! it's laura mcneil writing you from new york. sounds like you're living life out there in indonesia -- nice work! i was glad to hear you were okay after the earthquake. what a thing to witness.
i'm going to have to keep reading your blog now that i've found it -- another way to live vicariously through the travellers i know...!
but i will have a short repreive from the grind very soon -- i'm heading to ecuador and the galapagos for a couple of weeks beginning on the 16th. i know you spent some time there so i wanted to see if you had any recommendations as to things to see/do in the galapagos, and also, on the mainland. i'm going solo to the islands and then meeting my boyfriend in quito for the second week. we're thinking we want to head straight to the coast and find a small oceanside town with some beach bungalows and good sunsets. but we want to avoid the touristy spots.
i'm SO looking forward to this trip i can't tell you. it's needed.
just too bad it's so bloody short.
anyway, any advice you can offer will be well taken.
hope you're well.
cheers,
laura
