House hunting horrors!

Oh dear, where to begin... well, we have yet to find a house. House hunting has been the focus of our last 2 weeks here, and we're coming up short. There are plenty of great houses... unfortunately none of them are either near the Bintang Laut office on the coast (maybe a good thing with the impending threat of tsunamis!?) neither are they within the CUSO budget. Manado is a city with $$$... It is said that Jakarta is the most expensive city in Indonesia... but I bet Manado is right up there!

So we've seen everything from holes-in-the-wall to mansions. Because Bintang Laut is strongly suggesting we live in the city (uck), our standards are probably slightly higher than they would be if we were on a beach somewhere. Unfortunately we've yet to see anything on the islands, and are told that the liklihood of finding something there is slim-to-none.

So, our time is running out at our homestay (about 12 days left), but we're still holding out for something more natural... It's hard to wrap your head around living in a city when, in applying for this position, it was assumed we would be living in a quiet, natural space.

More once I get my voice back (!?!) and am feeling up to it! I think all this going from air conditioned spaces to the heat of this place is doing a number on me! Awww... and I was just beginning to see 'malls' in a new light - in appreciation of them as a haven of coolness in this stinkin' hot city!

Best of luck with the house hunting! Things here are good...boring/stagnant, but good. Keep making us all proud!
