Gado-Gado Goodness!

Well, I have to say, Gado-gado almost instantly became one of my favourite Indonesian gastronomic delights! It is the closest thing that you can come to when looking for a 'salad' in Indonesia. It's not the same as a fresh, crisp, leafy-green chef's salad... but there's a reason you don't get a lot of that in Indonesia (I believe hepatitis A to be the best one)! This is a 'boiled salad'... green beans, sprouts, carrots, and cabbage, green leaves of various trees, and tofu, pressed rice, topped with a boiled egg. The contents can vary from place to place, but you get the idea.

The sauce (which I always ask for on the side, because I find they completely tend to smother the veggies with three times the amount necessary), is a yummy, slightly sweet, slightly spicy, peanut sauce. The picture below is the way it comes, sauce and all... doesn't look very appetizing, but it's really quite tasty!

I love that when you ask for something 'bungkus' (wrapped up to go) here, they still use banana leaves in some places! Not quite the same as it was traditionally (since they now also use waxed brown paper and elastic bands), but I think it's still a nice touch!

I know, I know, you're all sick about hearing about the food here... but, what else can I say... work is the same for now, day in and day out, and I'm sure you don't want to read about THAT! And outside of work, well, we have very little life! Sad, but true. (You can read a little more on why that is in my previous post!)
